Background notes
Quite a dark nursery rhyme about a poor cat, a good boy and a bad boy. The song originates in the 16th century but in those days there was no happy ending to it. Many variations and alterations of the song exist. Children should learn that it is very bad to mistreat animals (as it is to mistreat other children). The onomatopoeic term "Ding dong bell" was already used by Shakespeare.
