Squirrels are a lot like people. They rush around all day having fun and collecting food and this makes them very tired.
Sammy is a baby squirrel. Can you imagine what he looks like? He is a red squirrel with a deep red shiny coat and he twitches his nose when he smells something interesting. Sammy has a beautiful tail that is just like a fluffy brush and he runs up and down trees and his little claws hold onto the bark of the trees. Can you picture him on a tree?
Now Sammy sometimes becomes very excited at bedtime and his Mummy and Daddy sing to him. The song goes like this:
Song:
Hush, little baby, don’t say a word
Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
Sometimes Sammy doesn’t go straight to sleep and when he lies awake his Mummy and Daddy talk to him about the wonderful things that they will do when Sammy is older.
Maybe they might have a mocking bird as a pet. Maybe they might make friends with a dog called Rover. Perhaps they might get a looking glass or even meet a Billy goat.
Sammy smiles as he imagines a mocking bird singing his favorite tune and a huge friendly dog called Rover and the little insects that would look really big when he looks at them through a looking glass.
Sammy smiles again when he thinks about the exciting games he will play with his family and friends and he starts to feel very, very sleepy.
Song:
Hush, little baby, don’t say a word
Mama’s gonna buy you a mockingbird
If that mockingbird won’t sing
Mama’s gonna buy you a diamond ring
If that diamond ring turns to brass
Mama’s gonna buy you a looking glass
If that looking glass gets broke
Mama’s gonna buy you a billy goat
Hush, little baby, don’t feel down
You’re still the sweetest little baby in town
So hush little baby, don’t you cry
Daddy loves you and so do I
It is quiet now. Sammy’s Mummy and Daddy say that a HUSH has fallen all around. No one can hear a hush, because a hush is what it sounds like when there is no sound to hear.
I wonder whether you can close your eyes and think about all the wonderful people you know and all the lovely plans you want to make.
Can you hear the HUSH?
It’s time to go to sleep now, … night-night.
