Ride A Toy Horse

My Mum

Song:
Ride a toy horse
To Banbury Cross
To see a fine lady
Upon a white horse

My Mum is embarrassing!
Don’t get me wrong, she is the kindest and most loving person you could ever meet but she has rings on her fingers and bells on her toes, in fact, she makes music where ever she goes!

People love my mum as she walks with a merry tune and a smile that beams from ear to ear. They point at the magical lady with beautiful long brown hair and their smiles go nearly upright to match that of my mum’s as she sings and dances to the beat.

I walk next to her with my face turned down. I wish she were like the other mums.

My Mum is embarrassing!
Some days we ride to Banbury Cross. With every turn of the pedals on her bike all I can hear are the jingles of rings and jangles of bells.

Song:
Ride a toy horse
To Banbury Cross
To see a fine lady
Upon a white horse
Rings on her fingers
And bells on her toes
She shall have music
Wherever she goes

As we merrily cycle along people wave and their turned down mouths are turned upright by the time she has ridden past. I ride next to her with my eyes screwed up wishing she were like all the other mums.

My Mum is embarrassing!
Sometimes mum comes to school and brings her musical instruments for the children to play. She has everyone captivated by her bewitching tunes and all their faces beam like the sun. She always gets everyone laughing and excited as they follow her around. I follow her with a sullen look, why can’t she be like other mums?

One day mum was humming a merry tune whilst tightening the reins on our toy horse and waiting for me to walk to school. I turned to mum and said: “You are embarrassing! Why can’t you be like the other mums?”

Mum stopped humming and stopped smiling and her eyes looked sad.  She didn’t speak as she slowly took off her bells and rings.

As we walked to school I had a smile on my face. And for the first time we walked without anyone pointing or looking at us. But I was the only one smiling. All the other mothers and children walked the same walk and looked the same. There was no music, no-one was dancing, and nobody was smiling or laughing. As I waved goodbye to my mum I understood. I didn’t want my mum to be like everybody else. She brought light, music and smiles to us all just the way she is.

My mum isn’t embarrassing, she is wonderful! I rushed over to my mum and hugged her tightly. She looked down at me with a huge smile.

My mum is wonderful!
She has rings on her fingers and bells on her toes and now I have cymbals on my knees, and we make music wherever we go!

Song:
Ride a toy horse
To Banbury Cross
To see a fine lady
Upon a white horse
Rings on her fingers
And bells on her toes
She shall have music
Wherever she goes
